After battling personal turmoil and anxiety for a prolonged period of time, Selena Gomez made an appearance at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival to promote her latest movie ‘The Dead Don’t Die.’

During one of the press conferences at the festival, she addressed the issue of increased use of social media by young people. As per ‘Variety,’ the 26-years-old actress said “I think our world is going through a lot.”

"I would say for my generation, specifically, social media has really been terrible. It does scare me when you see how exposed these young boys and young girls are. They are not aware of the news. I think it's dangerous for sure. I don't think people are getting the right information sometimes," Selena, who has over 150 million followers on Instagram, explained.

Even though she had an opinion about the devastating effects of social media on her generation, unfortunately, Selena thinks there is no single way to stop the excessive use of social media channels. "I think it's pretty impossible to make it safe at this point,” she said, “Kindness and encouragement only for a bit! Just remember- negative comments can hurt anybody's feelings. Obvi.”

One of the most followed celebrities on social media; Gomez kept herself away from Instagram for a long time to keep her sanity intact. “I'm grateful I have the platform. I don't do a lot of pointless pictures. For me, I like to be intentional with it. It just scares me.” She also added that she keeps in check the frequency with which she posts on her Instagram handle.

She feels for the way younger generation is suffering with negative effects of social media. “I'll see these young girls… I’ll meet them at meet-and-greets. They are devastated, dealing with bullying and not being able to have their own voice. It can be great in moments. I would be careful and allow yourself some time limits of when you should use it.”

Her statement about dangers of social media has also triggered a lot of questions from social media ‘warriors’ who think it is highly hypocritical of her to criticize social media when she is herself a huge social media star and makes a big income from these channels.

Gomez has been dealing with a lot of health-issues since 2016. She was diagnosed with lupus, which was followed by a kidney transplant. In 2018, she rarely made any public appearance due to her deteriorated mental condition which might be a result of her very public, on-and-off affair with singer Justin Bieber. After months of media speculations, the couple finally broke up, and Justin ended up marrying Hailey Baldwin within a few months of breaking up from Selena. What really happened between the two of them remains clandestine till date. Selena made her first appearance in two years, at the WE Day California celebrations in April 2019.
