TN logs 529 new COVID-19 cases; two fatalities

Chennai: Tamil Nadu on Friday reported 529 new COVID-19 infections, including a returnee from Jharkhand pushing the overall tally to 35,79,368 the health department said.

Two more people have succumbed to the virus, taking the death toll to 38,044, a medical bulletin said here.

Chennai accounted for the majority of the cases at 111, followed by Chengalpet (57) while the remaining infections were spread across other districts. As many as 19 districts reported new cases below 10 while Ramanathapuram and Tirupathur recorded zero fresh infections each.

The recoveries rose to 35,36,027 with 463 people recuperating from the infection in the last 24 hours, leaving 5,297 active cases.

The state capital leads among districts with 2,387 active infections and overall 7,89,730 coronavirus cases.

A total of 16,927 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, pushing the cumulative number of tests to 6,93,14,622 till date.

A 80-year old man from neighbouring Chengalpet district with comorbidities and COVID-19 positivity was admitted to the Chengalpet Medical College Hospital on September 18 with complaints of fever, cough and difficulty in breathing. He died on September 22 due to COVID-19 pneumonia.

Meanwhile, a 67-year old man from Tiruvallur district with comorbidities and COVID-19 positivity was admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai on September 10 with complaints of fever, cough and shortness of breath. He died on September 21 due to COVID-19 pneumonia, the bulletin said.
