Mumbai: Heart disease can be described as a range of conditions which tend to affect your heart. There are many types of heart disease like coronary artery disease, congenital heart defect, arrhythmia, dilated cardiomyopathy, myocardial infarction and heart failure. Each one has their symptoms, and treatment may differ from person to person. Since India is witnessing an alarming rise in the occurrence of heart disease, it is the need of the hour to get a timely treatment, and adhere to lifestyle modifications like opting for a well-balanced diet, staying fit, quitting smoking and managing stress, suggest experts.

Dr Bharat Jain, a cardiologist from SRV Mamta Hospital, Dombivali, highlighted, “India will soon be the global capital for heart diseases, mainly coronary artery diseases. Various causes have been responsible for the rapid growth in the incidence of heart diseases mainly lifestyle changes, dietary indiscretions, increase in the prevalence of diabetes mellitus and rampant use of tobacco. The change in the scenario is that younger patients are affected with heart diseases and have to suffer the brunt of the damage for a very long time.”

He added, “Ignorance about the possibility of heart disease at a young age leads to late presentation to hospital and a further complicated course. Awareness drive to quit tobacco, optimize diabetes/hypertension control, a healthy and fit lifestyle, incorporating yoga, morning walks and exercise in our busy the schedule will be helpful.”

“There is 59% increase in heart disease cases, since 1990. The reason is increasing hypertension, diabetes, hectic lifestyles, use of tobacco, over consumption of fast food and sugary drinks and salt, and also lack of exercise. It is essential to stay hale and hearty by embracing a healthy lifestyle,” concluded Dr. Bipeenchandra Bhamre, Cardio-Thoracic Surgeon, Sir H N Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre.
