A 68-year-old woman with osteoarthritis successfully treated at Kohinoor Hospital
Fatima Khan (name changed), a 68-year-old Mumbai resident, landed at Kohinoor Hospital in 2018, with problems like an inability to walk properly, or do any chores. Her x-ray revealed that she had avascular necrosis of the t hip, sever lumbar spondylosis and osteoarthritis. She underwent a total hip replacement and knee replacement surgery. Now, the patient is able to walk again.
Patient Fatima Khan was unable to walk for about 6 months. And when she came to Kohinoor Hospital in the year 2018, on investigation it was found that she had avascular necrosis (also called as osteonecrosis or bone infarction, is the death of bone tissue due to interruption of the blood supply) of right hip, with severe restriction of movement. She was also bent over because of her flexion deformity at the hip and had had sever lumbar spondylosis, with pain radiating down her right leg along with stage 4 advanced severe osteoarthritis. The patient experienced severe pain in the left knee and required to immediately undergo surgery.
Dr. Gurvinder Singh Sawhney, an Orthopaedic Surgeon at Kohinoor Hospital, Mumbai, said, “When we analyzed her, we found that she required a right hip replacement and a left knee replacement surgery. Then, a total hip replacement (THR) a surgery was done to replace a worn out or damaged a hip joint in December 2018. In the patient’s case, she had a hip that migrated up, and there was also a deformity known as flexion deformity of hip, wherein the hip is bent forward. Fitting the hip in the correct position to get adequate function without the hip getting dislocated was a challenge which was overcome by adding local releases and tissue releases. Hip replacement becomes necessary for a patient with avascular necrosis, as it is done to restore the anatomy. Then, after a month she was able to walk up to a considerable distance.”

“In January 2019, a total knee replacement surgery was performed on her, which restores the weight-bearing façade of a damaged, worn, or diseased knee joint. The hospital stay for single knee replacement surgery is 5 days and the patient is also briefed about the recovery process before the surgery. Furthermore, she was also asked to take physiotherapy. The patient is fine after both the surgeries and she had come for a follow-up in the month of April. She can walk without crutches and climb the stairs as well,” he added.
Patient Fatima Khan said, “My condition was worsening day by day as I was unable to move freely and used crutches while walking. My elder daughter helped me to do my daily activities. I had almost given up but, I saw a ray of hope when I came to Kohinoor Hospital. After the surgeries, I am feeling better now. Earlier, I couldn’t move my leg but now I can do so. Now, I can walk with the help of a walker, and my hip and knee pain has subsided. I thank the doctor and the hospital for giving me a new life.”
