YouTuber Shubham Mishra has recently got himself on the receiving end of fierce netizens and various celebrities for his objectionable video where he can be heard hurling open threats to a female stand-up comedian Agrima Joshua.

The Issue

A female comedian Agrima Joshua has been facing a barrage of claims that she allegedly ‘insulted’ the warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji. A clip of her comic act from 2019 was circulated on social media recently, leading to these threats against her and a call by the Maharashtra home minister for police action to be taken against her.

In the clip, Joshua joked about opinions that some Quora users held about the Maharashtra government’s plan to build the statue in the Arabian Sea, including the claim that it would shoot lasers beams on Pakistani infiltrators and power the state using solar cell technology.

The video was part of a sketch Joshua had performed in April 2019 at a cafe in Khar (West). It was also reported that angry social media users shared details of the I’s employees, while activists of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena allegedly barged into the I and damaged some property.

Maharashtra’s home minister, Anil Deshmukh said he has asked the police to take legal action against the comedian. “I have instructed CP [Commissioner of Police] Mumbai and IG [Inspector General] Cyber to take legal action expeditiously,” he tweeted. “I urge everyone to maintain calm and law will take its course.”

Several other politicians have also demanded action against the comedian.

In a video posted on Twitter, Joshua apologised to anyone she may have offended.

Who is Shubham Mishra?

He is a YouTuber with over 298K subscribers; Shubham Mishra is a popular name on almost all the social media platforms including Instagram and TikTok.

Over the time, Mishra has gained massive popularity for showing aggressive rage towards current affairs and hot topics of the news. He has often been dragged under the spotlight for his distasteful rant on some content creators and their ideologies.

Recently, Mishra uploaded a video on social media full of filthy language and open rape threats to a female stand-up comedian Agrima Joshua. In the video, he could be heard threatening Joshua of rape for her ‘jokes’ on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken cognizance of the threats that Joshua received and sought immediate action from the Gujarat police against a man who hurled abuses and issued rape threats to the stand-up comedian.

The commission’s chairperson Rekha Sharma wrote to Gujarat’s director general of police (DGP) Shivanand Jha regarding the video that was going viral.

“The NCW is committed to creating safe online space for women and ensuring cybersecurity to women and is perturbed by the rise in use of cyberspace to instigate crime against women,” Sharma said in the letter.

NCW also took to Twitter to inform about Mishra’s arrest and reassured people about their commitment to the safety of women.

“Following @NCWIndia Chairperson @sharmarekha’s letter to #DGPGujarat, Vadodara Police has arrested Shubham Mishra. #NCW hopes this would be a lesson for all those who threaten women online. We are committed towards ensuring safety and security of #women,” the NCW tweeted.

Mishra later took down the video and apologised for the abusive comments he made.
