Tutors boost interest for teaching jobs as schools debate reopening: Indeed
National: As educational institutions across the country debate on reopening safely. Data revealed by Indeed, the world’s #1 job site, suggests that the demand for teaching and tutor jobs in India increased significantly between July 2020-July 2021.
Job searches on Indeed for “teacher” jobs between July 2020-July 2021 saw a 13% increase as compared July 2019 - July 2020. While clicks for “teacher” jobs also saw a 50% increase between the same period, thus indicating heightened interest in the teaching profession among job seekers.
Indeed data which is a real-time indicator of the labour market activity also analyzed the searches for “tutor” jobs which increased significantly by 78% in the same period. The momentum seems to be the result of the sudden closure of schools and colleges, which may have necessitated the demand for personal tutors to assist students studying from home, during the pandemic.
While the overall spike in clicks and searches for “teacher” jobs suggested rising job seeker demand, the postings for “teacher” jobs saw a de-growth of 13% between July 2020-July 2021.
A comparison of Indeed’s city-wise data on demand (as indicated by the number of clicks) and supply (as indicated by the number of postings) of teaching jobs between May-August 2021 as compared to May-August 2020 reveals that Kolkata has the lead in “teacher” job postings, followed by Chennai, Pune, Delhi and Mumbai.
Kolkata also leads in clicks for “teacher” roles and is followed by Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.

Sashi Kumar, Head of Sales, Indeed India said, “Amid this economic slowdown, teaching has been one of the few professions that have been impacted the most by the pandemic, as physical classes discontinued, almost as soon as the pandemic began. However, the increased demand for “teacher” jobs suggests that teachers pivoted and adapted themselves to new circumstances in record time to keep themselves relevant. What is also interesting to note was the increased jobseeker interest in the ‘Tutor’ role. This suggests that an ecosystem might have developed, owing to continuous closures of schools and colleges pushing people to opt for personal tuitions and continue learning. While our data indicate a healthy employment scenario, a closer analysis indicates some level of talent mismatch with employers finding it a little difficult to find the right talent to fill these roles.”
