Aren’t we so excited to find out that our most favourite Sherlock Holmes had a baby sister? But it’s quite a mystery why we have never heard of her before! Case in point: why we have never read about Enola Holmes who was 20 years junior to Sherlock! So, did we miss something? Did Sherlock really have a third sibling? Well, the trending trailer for ‘Enola Holmes’ might shed some light on these grave matters! But to be certain, let’s try and look for the missing link named Enola.

To dig out the answers we must travel back in time. Year 1887, Sherlock Holmes is introduced with ‘A Study in Scarlet’. And within the next few years, Holmes went on to become the world’s most popular private detective, arguably, along with his constant partner and voice Dr. Watson. Sherlock Holmes’ creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, kept Holmes’ private life somewhat vague, and all we know is this genius personality had an elder brother, Mycroft Holmes. Professionally a govt. Official and 7 years older to Sherlock, senior Holmes is described as the more intelligent one of the two.

However, Sir Conan Doyle never made a reference to any third sibling or a sister. If you are putting an effort in linking up Eurus from the BBC series ‘Sherlock’ with the original fiction, then your deduction is a miss! The character was crafted only for the show. And we are sorry to disappoint you once more if you learned about Sherrinford Holmes as a Holmesian brother. The truth is, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, probably while creating one of the most successful characters in history, thought of Sherringford as a potent or alternative name for Sherlock. The name could be traced down in his notes. It was William S. Baring-Gould, who later wrote a fictional biography of Holmes, ‘Baker Street: A Life of the World's First Consulting Detective’ (1962), acquainted the readers with Sherrinford Holmes as the third sibling utilising his creative liberty.

So when and why exactly the sissy part was latched onto? American author Nancy Springer first brought into being Enola Holmes as the 14-year-old sister of Sherlock and Mycroft in a young adult detective series. ‘The Case of the Missing Marquess’, the first in the row book published in 2006 was followed by 5 other mysteries, the last one being ‘The Case of the Gypsy Goodbye’ in 2010. Congratulations fellow sleuths, case cracked!

The Enola Holmes mystery series is a pastiche, i.e., a work of art or fiction that patterns itself after other celebrated forms of visual art or artists. The pastiche genre celebrates the imitated art form by paying tribute to the source, in a unique style.

Evidently, the series has borrowed the legendary Sherlock from the Canon of Sherlock Holmes comprising of the 56 short stories and novels. However, the legend never takes the centre stage in the plot. Sherlock and Mycroft keep doing their job staying rather low-key, while Enola is gradually carved out as a self-driven hawkshaw.

The Netflix original film ‘Enola Holmes’ is based on the Nancy Springer series, casting the ‘Stranger Things’ girl Millie Bobbie Brown as the leading lady. The ‘Enola Holmes’ trailer features ‘Superman’ Henry Cavill as her famous, mastermind brother Sherlock! It would be fascinating to watch Cavill making use of some brain muscle this time!

The ‘Geralt of Rivia’ actor from ‘The Witcher’ series kept coming up to the headlines for the look his character, especially pulling off that humongous physique! Sam Claflin as Mycroft and Helena Bonham Carter as the mother of the trio look promising. The plot seemingly follows the maiden book where Enola’s mother disappears and her brothers come to a decision of sending their sis to a boarding school. But the brothers’ plan to tame the “wild child” fails as the junior-most Holmes manages to flee and sets on a voyage of finding their mother.

The trailer is an inkling of how adventurous the film might turn out to be. It’s fast-paced, energetic, and pretty much keeps you guessing, what’s next!
