A news that came as a relief for the students of Srinagar was the establishment of around 200 libraries in the city.

Srinagar is the summer capital and the largest city of the union territory, Jammu and Kashmir.

“The book reading culture is diminishing here. When books and libraries would be readily available, people will obviously access them,” said Shahid Choudhary, Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar.

The Deputy Commissioner added that so far 21 libraries are established in various hostels of professional and degree colleges. Further, as per the plan each panchayat and some wards of Srinagar will also have a library. He explained the students will read at leisure and that is the idea behind setting up libraries in hostels and not in colleges.

Each library will have roughly 2000 books and 2 computers with internet facility.

The involvement of student at every level is going to be paramount. The students shall be in full charge of the planning and management of the libraries. In fact, the students shall only finalise the list of books for each of the library after which they would be acquired by the administration.

Shahid Choudhary further mentioned that of the total libraries around 150 libraries will be established in the schools of peripheral areas in the coming months. He also explained that the management style will vary in the panchayats. The libraries over there will be managed by the panchayat people.

This move is appreciated and welcomed by the people of the city.
