Mumbai: Railways has finally given a go-ahead to women commuters, to travel in the suburban local trains. The decision comes two days after the exchanges of letters between the Railways and the state government after the latter asked to permit the travel.

Initially, the local train commute for all women was to start on October 17, however, the Railways forwarded the state government's proposal to Railway Board, stating the COVID-19 protocol and requirement to maintain social distancing. Following that, Union Railway Minister made the announcement today after he held a meeting with officials from Railway Board to review the progress of various ongoing works related to the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC).

"I am happy to announce that Railways will allow women to travel on suburban trains from 21 Oct between 11 am to 3 pm and after 7 pm. We were always ready and with the receipt of a letter from Maharashtra Govt today, we have allowed this travel," said Piyush Goyal.
