Medininagar, Jharkhand: A Maoist leader, who was wanted in more than a dozen criminal cases including murder, was arrested from Jharkhand's Palamu district, a police officer said on Wednesday.

The arrested Maoist leader, identified as Amarnath Chamar alias Amar Ji alias Sewak Ram, was mostly active in neighbouring Garhwa district, said Palamu Superintendent of Police Chandan Kumar Sinha.

Acting on a tip-off, Chamar (50) was nabbed from Dhanchabar village in Pandu area on Tuesday night, the SP said.

Given his age, Chamar was mostly involved in training youth and spreading Maoist ideology, Sinha said.

Earlier, he was a part of a squad, in which former Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) MP Kameshwar Baitha was once a zonal commander.

Baitha later gave up arms and joined the mainstream.

He had won the Lok Sabha election from Palamu on a JMM ticket in 2009.
