Cricket is like a religion in India. And this has been a rightful statement on many occasions including the recent declaration made by Google India about the most searched option in the year 2020. Indian Premier League (IPL) beats even the coronavirus for the top trending query overall in the year, according to Google India's 'Year In Search 2020'. The year before this, i.e. in the pre-coronavirus life, the top trending query on Google Search was 'ICC Cricket World Cup'.

Indians were more worried about their IPL matches, while the rest of the world was hooked on the global Covid-19 pandemic and the history-making US elections. However, IPL also made it to the top five in the global search trends.

“The top 10 overall list of trending search terms this year clearly reflected the global concern around the pandemic, with a natural surge in queries about coronavirus. But, interestingly, our fascination with cricket remained unchallenged as the IPL came out tops, trumping even the US elections,” Google said in a blog post.

After a lot of to and fro, the 13th edition of IPL was organised in UAE from September 19 to November 10. This season of IPL witnessed a record-breaking 28 per cent increase in viewership compared to the last edition.

IPL, which was followed by the coronavirus, US election results, Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sammann Nidhi (PM Kisan Scheme), Bihar election results and Delhi election results – defined the overall top trending query on the search engine of Google in India.

Talking about the world personalities the following individuals made it to the overall top trending list: 1. US President-elect Joe Biden; 2. Arnab Goswami, an Indian journalist, who made headlines after his arrest by the Maharashtra police for the alleged abetment of suicide of interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother Kumud 3. Singer Kanika Kapoor. 4. North Korea leader Kim Jong Un and 5. Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan. The list also included actress Kangana Ranaut, Rhea Chakraborty and Ankita Lokhande.
