Three Filmmakers from Jamia Milia Islamia Invited For Oscars Jury

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science, USA recently released its list of invitees as members of the voting board for the 2021 Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars. Out of 800 film professionals from 68 countries, there were many from India, including celebrities like Alia Bhatt and Hrithik Roshan.

Now, by a recent report, has stated that 3 filmmakers, who are also alumni of Jamia Millia Islamia, have been invited by the academy for membership. They are Nishtha Jain, Shirley Abraham, and Amit Madhesia.

Nishtha Jain is a National Award-winning filmmaker known for directors like Pink Gang, Laxmi Aur Me, City of Photos, At My Doorstep, and Family Albums.

The filmmaker was one of six outstanding female documentary filmmakers for the Golden and Egg Award for Film Industry for The Golden Thread in the film industry. In addition, he has received 25 other national and international awards for his films.

Amit Madhesia and Shirley Abraham are a filmmaker duo known for their early documentary Cinema Travelers, which has been screened at Cannes, Toronto and New York Film Festivals, a rare trifecta for documentaries. It received a permanent ovation at Cannes. The film won 19 awards including the President’s Gold Medal in India.

Amit Madhesia is also a photographer best known for the award-winning ‘Night Screening of Traveling Cinema in India’, a series of 12 photographs that received the World Press Photo Award in 2011.

Other works by Amit Madhesia and Shirley Abraham include Saraswati (2018) and The Hour of the Lynching (2019).
