Puducherry sees spike in fresh COVID-19 cases

Puducherry: The union territory of Puducherry logged 91 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, a senior Health department official said on Tuesday.

Nine new COVID-19 cases were reported on Monday.

The 91 cases were detected during the examination of 2,520 samples in the last 24 hours ending 10 AM Tuesday, Director of Health G Sriramulu said in a release.

The Puducherry region accounted for 65 of the 91 cases followed by Karaikal with 19 and Yanam (7).

Mahe, an enclave of Puducherry in Kerala, did not report any new case, the Director said.

The COVID-19 caseload in the union territory rose to 1,66,923 with the addition of 91 new infections. Fifty patients recovered during the last 24 hours and the overall recoveries rose to 1,64,419, the Director said.

The number of active cases stood at 542, he said, adding that eight patients were in hospitals and the remaining 534 in home quarantine.

No fresh fatality was reported from any of the four regions and the death toll remained at 1,962.

Sriramulu said the Health Department has so far examined 22,96,323 samples and 19,39,783 of them were found to be negative.

The test positivity rate was 3.61 per cent on Tuesday while the fatality and recovery rates were 1.18 per cent and 98.50 per cent respectively.

Sriramulu said the Health Department has so far administered 17,46,619 doses which comprised 9,72,294 first doses, 7,41,059 second doses and 33,266 booster doses.

Meanwhile, Lt Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan told reporters at the end of her visit to some of the government schools that, "people should be fully cautious as the new cases of COVID-19 have been on the rise since recently."

She said that people should not lower their guard in fighting the spread of the viral infection.

"Wearing of masks by people is now made mandatory in the Union Territory," she said.

She also said that the government had launched measures to combat the spread of diarrhoea and cholera cases in Karaikal region.

She further said Chief Minister N Rangasamy along with Ministers K Lakshminarayanan and Chandra Priyanka was now camping in Karaikal to review the situation.
