Puducherry: The union territory of Puducherry witnessed a dip in number of new coronavirus cases during the last 24 hours recording 81 infections, a senior official of the Health department said on Thursday.

The 81 cases after the examination of 5,953 samples pushed the overall tally to 1,21,333, the new Director of the Department of Health and Family Welfare Services G Sriramulu said in a press release.

The union territory had logged 120 new COVID-19 infections on Wednesday.

The Health department Director said the Puducherry region alone accounted for 62 new cases followed by Mahe (12), Karaikal (6) and Yanam (1).

He said no fresh fatality was reported during the last 24 from any of the four regions of the union territory and the death toll remained at 1,798.

The active cases in the union territory stood at 888 with 167 in hospitals and the remaining 721 in home isolation.

Sriramulu said while 100 patients recovered and were discharged in the last 24 hours, the total recoveries rose to 1,18,647.

The test positivity rate was 1.36 per cent while the fatality and recovery rates were 1.48 per cent and 97.79 per cent respectively.

The Health department has so far tested 37,875 healthcare workers and 22,978 frontline workers.

The Director said that 5.15 lakh people coming under the category of either senior citizens or those above 45 years with comorbidities have been inoculated against the virus.

In all 7.22 lakh people including those who received second dose have been covered in the union territory so far.
