Noida (UP): A history-sheeter involved in over a dozen criminal cases was held after he suffered an injury in a gunfight with police in Uttar Pradesh's Noida on Wednesday, officials said.

The gunfight broke out in the early hours when the accused and his accomplice were on a motorcycle and intercepted by the local police for checking on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, the officials said.

"They were on a motorcycle which did not have a registration plate. When asked to stop for checking, they sped away. A police team chased them and the accused opened fire on it. One of the accused got injured in the police firing and fell down from the motorcycle, while the other managed to escape," Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Noida, Ranvijay Singh said.

The injured accused, identified as Mustakeem, was sent to a hospital for treatment and later taken into custody, Singh said, adding a combing operation has been launched to nab his absconding partner.

An illegal firearm, along with some ammunition, has been seized from his possession, the official said.

According to police, Mustakeem, hailing from Noida, is a history-sheeter with 15 FIRs registered against him at various police stations in Gautam Buddh Nagar district.

He has been booked under the Gangster's Act, the Arms Act, the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, among others, police said.

A fresh case has been lodged against him at the Expressway Police Station and further proceedings are underway, they added.
