Bengal reports 58 more COVID deaths, 2,964 fresh cases

Kolkata: The COVID-19 death toll in West Bengal mounted to 2,909 after 58 more people succumbed to the disease on Tuesday, the health department said in a bulletin.

The state's coronavirus tally also rose to 1,44,801 after 2,964 new infections were reported, it said.

In the last 24 hours, 3,251 COVID-19 patients have recovered from the disease and discharged from various hospitals, improving the state's discharge rate to 79.10 percent from 78.46 percent on Monday.

So far, 1,14,543 people have been cured of the disease in the state, it added.

The number of active cases stood at 27,349, the bulletin added.

It said that 37,524 samples have been tested for the contagion in the last 24 hours while 16,34,102 such tests were conducted to date in West Bengal.

North 24 Parganas district accounted for the highest 18 fatalities, followed by Kolkata (16) and South 24 Parganas (six). The remaining 18 deaths were recorded in several other districts, the bulletin said.

The 2,964 new cases include 590 from North 24 Parganas, 541 from Kolkata, 195 from Paschim Medinipur, and 134 from Howrah.

Meanwhile, a senior officer of Beniapukur police station in the metropolis tested positive for COVID-19 and he was under home isolation, official sources said.
