India is the second most populated country in the world. According to the report of 2017, the country accommodates 1.3 billion people. It is the census which is given the task to outline the per cent of males and females in the lot. As per the latest report showcased by the census, 48% of the total population is female.

In a country with more than 497 million women, safety and protection of their rights become the foremost concern for the government. Although women empowerment and safety is one of the key components in the election manifesto of all the parties, the real picture is something else.

A survey which was conducted in the year 2018 by Thomson Reuters states that India is the most dangerous country for women. Yes! You heard that right. The country has topped the list in three different categories.

●    Risk of sexual violence as well as harassment.
●    The risk from cultural, tribal as well as traditional practices.
●    Risk of human trafficking and sex slavery.

But have you ever thought of the reason behind this? We have reached Mars when on the other hand our women are not even safe to walk in the road. There are numerous reasons to why India has been awarded this stature.

Some of the key causes are outlined below:

●    Religion & Culture: India is a land of varied culture. It is true that the country advocates 9 religions but what the status of women in each is the same. Hinduism is the most practiced religion in the country. Hindus worship at least 64 crores, God and Goddesses, but the status of women living in their home is still objectionable. According to Hinduism, it is the moral duty of a woman to serve her husband. A woman cannot pursue any further studies or a job after marriage. At that time of the month, a lady is not allowed to enter the holy surroundings of a temple. The Sabarimala Temple incident which took place in Kerala is the evidence which proves the downfall of the women in the Indian society. One of the major victories for women was awarded by the Supreme Court when it abolished the practice of “Tripple Talaq”.

●    Internet: You may not know but the internet plays a major role uplifting as well as degrading the position of women in society. The netizens can fight for the right of the women and can also degrade the position of the same. In the incident which took place a few days back, when a video was posted on social media featuring a middle-aged woman commenting on the type of dress a girl should wear. She told that if a girl wears short dresses then she is inviting herself to rape. This incident had some positives and negatives of its own. Due to the video going viral the woman had to apologies to the group of girls to whom she had commented. The negative thing was the youth used her as a tool for creating MEMEs. This is when the country contradicted itself. On one side it took a stand to uplift the dignity of a woman; on the other hand, it degraded the status of the culprit by creating memes. Moreover, people also use the internet to take out personal rivalries. After getting ditched in their personal life, many boys use the internet to make all the personal chats and private moments with the girls in public.

●    Work Culture: India has the largest constitution in the world. It clearly states that men and women have equal rights and liberties in the workplace. But the scenario is very different. Today, a man and a woman working in the same firm and in the same position are rewarded with a different pay scale. This is what is degrading the work life of the women. There are more than thousands of cases which were filed under workplace discrimination and harassment. The #MeToo trend which took the internet on the storm was also based on workplace discrimination and harassment.

●    Lack Of Legal Proceedings: If you turn the pages of the history you will find that India has always been a male dominant society. Although there were laws and regulations which served to uplift the stature of women in the society, they were hardly followed. The reason behind them was the power and support of the political goons. According to the latest report, rape cases are the fourth most reported crime which is done against a woman. After the brutal incident of Nirbhaya took place in December 2012, the country witnessed a revolutionary change in the legal actions against the rape culprit. Today, there is a death penalty for a rapist raping a girl less than 12 years.

Conclusion
The cases of gender discriminations and sexual violence and harassment are reported each day around the country. Due to the lack of judicial power and the inability of the government to take execute a perfect for these culprits, is what boosts the morale of these devils. Today, India is the most dangerous place for a woman in the country is due to the following issues mentioned above.
