West Bottoms' Books in the Bottoms - the Fifth Year in Kansas City

Meet and greet local authors throughout the District's First Friday Weekend March 6-8

KANSAS CITY, Mo.: The fifth Books in the Bottoms event will bring out local authors for a meet and greet with West Bottoms First Friday shoppers on March 6-7. The entertainment district will also be open on Sunday for shopping. Additionally, the West Bottoms encourages shoppers to bring any book donations to area stores. The books will be used in a free library exchange for the area to launch this summer.

The free, two-day Books in the Bottoms event will have authors scheduled at various stores. They've authored fiction genres from romance to sci-fi and children's books. Author, Rachel Ellyn, will do a children's reading at 11 am on Friday at Serendipity, and follow with a how-to-write children's books lecture from 11:30 to noon. Other authors include Dyann Barr, Rod Galindo, Jan Gephardt, Ronda Hassig, Aaron Hollingsworth, William Mitchell, and Cathy Morrison at various times and stores.

The area averages around 20,000 visitors this special shopping weekend. Stores have a trove of all things vintage, antique, and unique, story-rich items. The thirteen-block area is the largest indoor, vintage shopping experience in the nation. Many of the West Bottoms' shops have old books for sale. Increasingly vintage books are used in décor beyond their handsome look on bookshelves. Home décor experts will place books under lamps, or under décor items to add height and interest.

"We love hosting Books in the Bottoms that features Kansas City-area authors, now in its fifth year," said Amber Arnett-Bequeaith, West Bottoms spokesperson for the district. "Shoppers and bookworms alike will love this event. Appropriately, the Worm Moon on March 9, follows our efforts to collect books for a free exchange library with the book donations."
