Plot: Ujda Chaman is the story of a typical West Delhi Punjabi family, who are looking for a girl for their elder son Chaman (Sunny Singh). He is a Hindi lecturer at Delhi University and has been trying to get married for the past five years. But because of his receding hairline, he is unable to find a suitable bride. To add fuel to the desperation of the Kohli family, an astrologer’s prediction to get Chaman married before he turns 31, ends him up becoming the victim of a first-year student, who uses him to pass college examinations. From thinking about hair transplant to opting for a wig, Chaman who often finds himself as the butt of insensitive jokes leaves no stone unturned to look his age and get married.

Review: 'Ujda Chaman' is the official remake of the 2017 Kannada film, 'Ondu Motteya Kathe'. The performances by the lead actors are satisfactory as the script doesn't quite allow them to explore. Sunny Singh tries his best to fit into the role and turns on an innocent charm. Saurabh Shukla has a cameo in the role of the astrologer. Sharib Hashmi with a bit of role makes an impact. While, Maanvi Gagroo as Apsara has a pleasant screen presence and pulls in a heartfelt performance. Karishma Sharma and Aishwarya Sakhuja are effective in their small parts. Chaman's parents, played by Atul Kumar and Grusha Kapoor, are fun to watch. This loud, 'desi' couple does it all to see their son married and thus creates laughter.

Ujda Chaman has four songs with none of them being remarkable. While the first half of the film tries to be quirky and comic, the 'very loud Delhi family' humour and the even louder background score are a sore point. In the second half, the film brings in the message of accepting people for who they are.

One of the good things about the film is the way it shows Delhi. The Capital city looks beautiful as the camera pans over Hansraj College, India Gate, Hauz Khas, Dilli Haat, among the several other popular spots. A true-blue Delhiite will surely connect with the film because of this.

Everything in this movie is so predictable. It could have been a fun slice-of-life film that could have brought a serious issue into the general discourse. Overall, it is the weak writing that doesn't explore beyond the idea that makes the story flip.

Therefore, the most important reason to watch Ujda Chaman is to compare it with Ayushmann Khurrana's next film Bala, which also talks about premature balding and is out next week. Find out for yourself if the film is worth the controversy it created right before its release.
