Known as the Kingdom of Cheese this ancient land has a lot more to offer than simply what meets the eye.

There is an old saying, “A cheese may disappoint. It may be dull, it may be naive, it may be over sophisticated. Yet it remains cheese, milk's leap toward immortality” and this leap towards immortality is perhaps most common in Italy’s Kingdom of Cheese, Emilia Romagna. Situated between River Po and the Apennine Mountains it is one of the most fertile regions in Italy with long-stretched beaches along the Adriatic Sea coastline. One of its most appealing aspects is that this wealthy city in Italy is surrounded by a region of some historical places like Bologna, Ravenna, and Modena.

Home to some of the most sought after brands in the automotive industry like, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati and Ducati, this picturesque region is best known for its cheese, which actually gives it the name of Kingdom of Cheese. With so much at its disposal there are a number of things that can be explored in the region.

So for the next time you decide to visit the Kingdom of Cheese, here are the top five things you should totally do there:

  1. Let Down Your Hair at Brisighella: If you are thinking about hair waving to the dance of wind amid long stretches of low lying green lands, chances are you are already imagining yourself in the hidden village of Brisighella. This medieval village in Italy is best known for the Brisighella Olive Oil Tasting and with the temperature being cooler than Tuscany the olive here is known to mature slowly. Moreover with a 13th Century fort surrounding the city, Brisighella is the best place for a quick retreat from the modern rat race.
  2. Watch Classics Under the Stars: Imagine watching a rare Elio Petri piece under a star-lit sky on a big screen for free! Such things are possible only at the II Cinema Ritrovato at Piazza Maggiore where the waves touch your feet as you blissfully transcend with some old classics. Organized every summer by Cineteca di Bologna, this major film restoration is something that actually preserves some of the brilliant instances of human endeavour.

  1. Watch a play at Teatro Municipale: To keep up with your taste for the classics, explore the massive aesthetics of Reggio Emilia, where Teatro Municipale stands strong in spite of the massive fire that nearly destroyed it in 1741. Known to be Italian operatic tenor, Luciano Pavarotti’s debut stage the place is designed in the neoclassical style of the 1850s’. It’s most breath-taking feature consists of the 12 Tuscan columns  made of granite on the ground floor while on the first floor it has 13 windows spaced by Ionic columns.
  2. Take a Walk Back in Time at Cesenatico: Founded in 1302 this port canal was surveyed and drawn by Leonardo Da Vinci at the request of the Duke of Valentinois, Cesare Borgia. Ever since the Museo della Marineria has been sitting right on its water teaching about the history of the Adriatic Sea and the region around it. What is even more fascinating is you can practically board on these very boats which sail up and down the Adriatic Sea.
  3. Say Cheese: You certainly cannot think of visiting the Kingdom of Cheese and not try the King of Cheese, Parmigiano Reggiano. Not to be mistaken for the Parmesan cheese that is made in the USA and Australian Reggiano is one of the oldest cheese in the world, and only Emilia Romagna has the right to make this cheese. You can easily get a trip to the factories where the cheese is processed and as you walk through the whole process you actually get an idea about why the cheese is so popular across the world.
