Hosting parties is nothing new to Indian culture. In the pre-Colonial era, the zamindars would often host lavish parties at their residences. Over time, this gave way to more sophisticated banquets. The millennials were the first generation of Indians to have had birthday parties thrown to them to celebrate their childhood birthdays. Today, with the oldest among them celebrating the birthday of their children, anniversary, retirement and new year parties have become all the way more important. This has led us to join the global bandwagon of theme parties.

As the 2019 is about to end and if you would want to have a theme party for New Year’s Eve, there is no need for you to turn to professional decorators for the same. With some planning on your part, it is possible to have a successful party at home. Read on to know how you can plan the same.

1. Choose the theme
This is perhaps the most difficult part of arranging a theme party. To begin with, identify the age group of most of the guests. If it is less than 12, you can have a Snow White, Peppa Pig or a toy train theme. For teenage themes, Harry Potter, Batman, Deadpool, and Hannah Montana are worthy options. If you are planning to have an adult party, you can go for a F.R.I.E.N.D.S or GoT-themed one. You can personalize the party with the theme as well.

As for examples, if you are a grammar Nazi, you can have a crossword theme party. Cat, polka dots, lavender, equations, Guns N’ Roses are some other quirky themes that you can explore. Feel free to experiment with the theme of the party and do not hesitate to try out something that has not been tried out before.

2. Work on colour coordination for decoration
Once you have decided on the theme, you need to choose 2 or 3 colour pallet that would be most appropriate with it. Then make sure that all the decorations for the party revolve within the chosen colour. Not only will that help to reinforce the theme of the party, but it will be appealing to the eye. While decorating your home, try to cover all the surfaces. People usually go well on the ceilings with lights, balloons, and streamers and tend to ignore the rest of the room. Do not make that mistake. For the walls use theme-appropriate posters, plastic, fabric or art. The hard surfaces around can be covered with tablecloth, themed food or vases.

The floor is open to experimentation and you can always play around with tape designs, fur, balloons and more.

3. Prepare theme invites
If you want to stand out in the era of WhatsApp invites, you must send a themed physical invite. Not only will this make people aware of the theme, but it will also make them feel important. Try to send out the invites well in time so that your guests have ample time to plan what to wear to the party and what gifts to bring. While preparing invitation letters to ensure sure that you stick to the colour theme of the party. The letters may either be hand-drawn or printed. If they are printed make sure that you add a handwritten note to give it a personal touch.

4. Make sure that the food and beverage selection sticks to the theme
For example, if you are organizing a GoT-themed party, you can have The Hound’s Fried Chicken and Dothraki Artichoke Hearts on the menu. For a kid’s Barbie-themed party, you may want to use some food colouring and prepare pink mac and cheese, cupcakes with pink frosting and sprinkles and pink lemonade. A Harry Potter-themed party would call for butterbeer, canary creams, and chocolate frogs.

Invest some time in deciding a themed menu and see where you can get the items locally. If you do not find any character-specific food, you can always play with colours. An example in this regard would be that of Guns N’ Roses theme. Here the colour of the band is red and black with a touch of yellow. You may use artificial food colouring to ensure that all the food served at the party adheres to this combination.

5. Party games
If it is an adult party based on any sitcom theme, you may play a game where you need to enact a scene from it and the others need to guess. You can also get creative with conventional games like never-have-I-ever or dumb charades and make it fit into the party theme.

For a children’s Harry Potter themed party, you can get some medium-sized sticks and decorative material. Then, let the children get creative with making their wands. They can then play a statue game with the wand or indulge in some Harry Potter role play. For younger guests, you can have a car themed party which would involve decorations with car posters. The children will be given coloured pens, paper, and pencil and they will have to replicate any of the cars that they see around.

6. Return gifts
Any children’s party involves the concept if return gift. Make sure that the return gift is in tune with the theme of the party so that people can remember the party for years.

Tiny action figures make an appropriate gift for any character theme party. If it is a colour theme party, try to give a gift that of that colour, instead of wrapping just any gift in a wrapping paper of that colour. If the party in question is that of an adult, you may give this a miss.
Organizing any party is an art and having a theme only makes things more interesting. So, choose your theme well and with the above tips, you will surely make your New Year party a memorable one for yourself as well as for your guests!
