The occurrence of grey hair is associated with aging and that is why people do not appreciate its first appearance. Several factors affect the occurrence of greys. These include genetic factors, dietary habits, and lifestyle of an individual.

So, there is nothing much that one can do about the grey hair. The best thing here would be to dye one’s hair so that the greys are not visible. Another reason why many people take to dyeing is that they like to experiment with the natural colour of their hair. This is more applicable in the case of younger people.

Now, it is a myth that the hair dye comes out the best when done in expensive salons. With a little bit of care, one can achieve salon-like coloured hair from the comfort of your home. Here are some tips for the same.

1. Don’t allow the colour to drip from roots to the tips during touch-ups

A common scenario is when you have coloured hair and you need to do some touch-up. Make sure that you keep away from the ends of your hair at such times. The ends end up absorbing a greater amount of colour as they are more porous. As a result, if you are not careful, when you touch up the roots they will drip to the tips and make your hair look patchy.

To make sure that such a thing does not happen, take a handful of conditioners first and apply it judiciously all over your hair tips. Only then go for rinsing off the dye.

2. Get enough dye

If you have thick hair or hair that runs longer than your shoulders, a single box of hair colour will not be enough for you. Applying only that much may result in some patches being well coloured while the others remaining in their original state.

Make sure that you buy two boxes and mix the contents from both together. Be generous while applying the dye as that will help to ensure full coverage.

3. Choose your hair colour based on your hair texture

Curly, coarse and frizzy hair absorbs colour faster than fine-textured hair. Thus, to get the best results out of your hair colouring, choose the colour of the dye wisely.  If your hair is smooth and straight, you can go for a shade that is darker than your normal colour. This is applicable in the case of both blonde women as well as Indian women.

For women with frizzy hair, a warm texture like bronze or copper is recommended. Try to stick to a shade that is a little lighter than your natural hair.

This is applicable irrespective of whether you are dying your hair for styling purposes or for covering your greys.

4. Partition your hair

Often, people complain that when they colour their hair at home, there are certain patches of uneven hair colour. To avoid that, make a middle partition of your hair that runs from the very front to the back.

Now for each of the parts obtained, split into two more parts (this time horizontally). Start with colouring the two back portions first. This will make your dyeing look more professional as the back hair of an individual is naturally darker.

5. Do not tie your hair

Once you have dyed your hair, you will have to wait for it to dry before you can rinse it off by washing with a shampoo.

During that period do not tie your hair into a bun. Letting them run loose will give you the best result of your home dyeing.

6. Do not trust the picture of the model on the cover

Understand that the picture of the model on the cover has been edited and is not meant to dictate the exact shade of hair colour. In most cases, the picture is usually lighter than the actual colour.

For a more realistic picture, trust the shade card that is behind the box.

7. Go for a stand test

If you are dyeing your hair for the first time, this step is very important.  Take a small strand of hair and apply the dye to it. Let it stand for the said period and after that rinse it off.

You may also want to shampoo your hair after that. This will enable you to identify how your hair reacts to the formula of the dye and then decide on whether to colour the entire hair or not.

8. Use a mixing bowl

Irrespective of the brand you opt for, the instructions on the box will read that you must squeeze the dye straight from the bottle to your head.

However, if you want to get a salon-like finish at home, you must use a mixing bowl to mix the dye well. The same can then be applied with the help of a brush.

9. Untangle your hair

Before you start dyeing your hair, make sure that your hair is well untangled.

The smallest knot in your hair will lead to massive problems while dyeing (and more so after the dye dries off).

10. Take care of your hairline

If you let your hair dye in your scalp it will take days to get off. What is worse is that it will lead to drying of the scalp and pave the way for dandruff and several other dry scalp related conditions. To avoid that, apply some lip balm on your scalp before dyeing your hair.

The texture of the lip balm is such that it will prevent the dye from getting to the scalp.

With the aforementioned tips, one can get perfectly dyed hair in their homes. Not only will this be time-saving and cost-efficient as compared to going to the salon, but it will also result in your hair being better-taken care of. Thus, irrespective of what your priority is, dyeing your hair at home is a viable option.
