The movie might stand out for its ordinary factor but has to push harder to give a unique storyline.

Over the years Bollywood has given us several instances about friendships which find their roots in the early college days and eventually blossom into a lifetime companionship. Movies such as ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander’, ‘Dil Chahta Hai’, and lately the ‘Student of the Year’ franchise, took a look into the many dimensions of a friendship that is both competitive and affectionate in nature. Once again, as the entire world celebrates yet another Friendship Day, Bollywood has come up with a whole new but somewhat similar story about a boy, his quest through college and those few close friends that stick with him throughout a lifetime.

Sushant Singh Rajput leads a cast of unconventional yet extremely lovable actors who portray this handful of quirky characters in the Sajid Nadiadwala-produced movie, ‘Chhichhore’- loosely translated to ‘losers’. The trailer literally is like an introducing chapter of medias res novel that is bound to take you on a nostalgic journey about college. In its typical Bollywood style, the trailer never gives us a glimpse about any character who is ordinary but each one is larger-than-life. At least that is what Sushant’s character Anni, our narrator, wants us to believe.

The trailer gradually gives us a few snaps of Anni’s life in college- such as crushing on the most good looking girl, befriending a group of outlandish but generous guys, and of course, the other college jock who has an equal claim to being the most popular guy in college. The trailer leaves no place for suspense as it neatly sets down every aspect of the movie, such that after a point it makes the movie nearly predictable. There are scenes that tell us about the crisis the gang is going through as established adults and the moments they thought were crucial as growing adults in their early college days.

Somewhere it seems the trailer hints at the movie adapting a ‘Student of the Year’ tone with two college jocks trying to reclaim their thrones through several cultural and sports activities but at the same time there is a charm that is pretty unique to Sushant Singh Rajput. It is the similar ordinariness that the actor carries in his characters, something he has been doing since his debut role in the 2013 movie, ‘Kai Po Che’. On the other hand, the movie is also the debut of Naveen Polishetty who quickly gained the attention of several youngsters as one of the leading faces of All India Bakchod (AIB). Naveen, a lot like Sushant, adds up to the boy-next-door factor which easily gets the audience hooked to any storyline. It is perhaps only Shraddha Kapoor who stands out as the glamorous factor but that too is entirely toned down.

Overall, ‘Chhichhore’ promises perhaps two hours of slapstick comedy wrapping up a few minutes of nostalgia driven melody. The Nitesh Tiwari directed movie is set to release on September 6, this year. Watch the trailer here.
