NEW YORK: A  PLOS One publication update (published on April 11, 2018) provides new information regarding a 2003 study which evaluated the results of 4 years of  selenium & coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) supplementation in older men & women. The ongoing study showed that participants who had included these 2 nutrients in their diets for 12 years had  a lower mortality  risk due to cardiovascular disease.

In the original research, 443 healthy Swedish participants of average age of 78 years old, were given placebo, or 200 milli-grams CoQ10 plus 200 micro-grams selenium, on a daily basis, fora period of 2 years. At an average of 5.2 years since the onset of the study, participants who were given CoQ10 and selenium had less than 1/2 the cardiovascular mortality risk as compared to the participants who were given a placebo.  Moreover, participants who were given CoQ10 and selenium, exhibited better cardiac function and substantially lower concentration of the cardiac biomarker N-terminal proBNP, as well. A subsequent trial published in December of 2015 also indicated a reduced cardiovascular mortality risk for participants who were given CoQ10 and selenium during the fist decade of their intake of these 2 supplements.

This last study also demonstrated that, even after the passage of a dozen years, the cardiovascular disease  mortality risk was still lower for the participants who were given CoQ10 and selenium in the original trial. Specifically, the risk of death due to cardiovascular disease for supplemented participants was 41% less than the ones who were given placebo.. CoQ10's and selenium's positive outcomes was demonstrated even in patients with impaired functional capacity, ischemic heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes. The researchers attributed the supplements' study outcomes to their positive effects on cardiac function, inflammation, oxidative stress, and fibrosis.

About CoQ10
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a naturally occurring nutrient in humans' bodies.  CoQ10 can also be found in  many foods. CoQ10 has antioxidant properties that shields cells from damage, and is an important component of metabolism.

About Selenium
Selenium is an essential trace mineral which takes part in thyroid hormone metabolism and DNA synthesis, and fights oxidative damage and infection.
