Cathy Napier, 72, understands addiction. As a result of a broken back from a horseback riding accident decades ago, she developed a devastating substance dependency and at one point even ended up living in her car. That seems like a lifetime ago to the two-time author and executive director of Recovery Works in London, Kentucky, a detox and residential addiction treatment center owned by Pinnacle Treatment Centers (PTC). When Napier achieved sobriety, 40 years ago, she vowed to dedicate her life to helping others struggling with substance use disorders.

In her latest book, , Napier explores the family unit and the importance of familial healing when a loved one is struggling with addiction.

Napier’s decades of experience and her leadership role with Recovery Works of Pinnacle Treatment Centers, has given her incredible insight to inform the content of both her first book, and Addiction: From Bondage to Freedom. Napier’s books have been used to educate those who are struggling with addiction and mental health issues. The books provide positive steps family members and people struggling with addiction can take on their road to recovery.

Napier states, “This book has a huge family component. It provides tangible steps families can take to heal, including advice for those who have lost a loved one or may have a loved one stuck in the midst of addiction.” The author continues, “I struggled with addiction myself. I was able to get the necessary help and begin my own career helping others with similar experiences get into recovery and change their lives.”

Weaved into the book are anecdotes from Napier’s lifelong friend and country music superstar Naomi Judd; the two grew up together in Kentucky where Napier was born and raised. Judd has written her own book about her descent into depression and personal struggles with addiction to Klonopin.

Napier has a Master’s degree in counseling and attended Rutgers University for her post-graduate studies in addiction. She has extensive experience working in psychiatric hospitals, and was the director of the chemical dependency program for a hospital in Dallas. Napier also served as the director for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) substance abuse programs for the state of New Mexico. Her first book, Operation Daughters Addicted, is being used to teach and educate those who have a secondary diagnosis of disordered eating.
