The Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, launched the 'Sujal - Drink from Tap Mission', which is believed to be one of its kind. The basic modus operandi of the mission is to make available clean and quality drinking water from the tap to all the residents of the state living in the urban area by March 2022.

While launching the scheme Naveen Patnaik mentioned that Odisha has become the first state in the country to provide quality drinking water, fit for direct consumption, in urban areas.

The target of the state government is to provide quality drinking water to 15,00,000 people in 15 towns in a phased manner. The said project is estimated to cost around Rs. 1,300 crore.

In the initial phase, 9 wards in Bhubaneswar with 19,000 households and about 1,14,000 people and 2 wards in Puri having 3,785 households and 70,000 people will be a part of the project.

Mr Pathnaik expressed his gratitude that Bhubaneswar has become the first 10 lakh+ population city in India to ensure 100% piped water to every household.

Pratap Hena, Housing and Urban Development Minister, asserted the commitment given by the Chief Minister of Odisha, and further added that Odisha is the first state in our country where people in urban areas will be able to drink water directly from taps under the said initiative of the state government.
