Kohinoor Hospital successfully removes 1.5 cm tumour from 47-year-old man’s eye via nose
Mumbai: A team led by Dr Sanjay Helale, ENT specialist and HOD at Kohinoor Hospital, successfully operated a 47-year-old man with an eye tumour by performing a minimally invasive procedure through nose. The patient’s vision has been restored, and he is back to his daily routine.
47-year-old Ramchandra Malkar, a resident of Mumbra suddenly encountered swelling of the face, and redness around the eye. Later, it was revealed that there is a tumour present in his left eye which was benign. A non-cancerous (benign) tumour of the eye can be described as a growth that does no spread (metastasize) to the other parts of the body, and also the non-cancerous tumours are not life-threatening. However, the patient was referred to Kohinoor Hospital, wherein Dr Sanjay Helale gave him a new lease of life.
Dr Sanjay Helale, ENT specialist and HOD at Kohinoor Hospital, said, “The patient presented with left eye bulging out (it occurs when one or both eyes protrude from the eye sockets due to swelling of the muscles, fat, and tissue behind the eye), and congestion, over a month. After opting for an MRI, his vision and eye movements were normal. But, a 1.5 cm tumour was detected in the left eye, which could have caused vision impairment or permanent loss of vision. The tumours of the eye which are located of the nose side can be access through the nose. Thus, for the first time at Kohinoor Hospital, with the help of a minimally invasive technique, the tumour was removed via nose by performing a transnasal endoscopic orbital surgery. We secured the muscles of eyeball movement transconjunctivally after which anaesthesia was given.”
He added, “After performing the surgery for 2 hours, his eyeball has restored back to its position in the ball socket, and there is no threat to his vision. Moreover, the patient was discharged on the 3rd day of the surgery. Recently, nasal corridor has been approved for the brain and eye ball corridors without doing external scan. The endoscopic vision gives a cleaner vision and precision. Hence, one can explore this possibility with the treating doctor. Sometimes, the combined approach that is endoscopic and external, gives a better outcome than only the external alone.”
Patient Ramchandra Malkar said, “My life turned upside down, after I noticed that my face had swollen, and eyes had turned red. As a result, I couldn’t concentrate on my work. I was deeply saddened, and devastated, after doctor broke the news about the notorious tumour. But I believe that one should not lose hope no matter how hard the life is.
