The movie spans between the encounter and the aftermath that followed which led to further discussion about violation of human rights and the infamous Jamia Masjid attacks of 2010

In the trailer of ‘Batla House’ we hear John Abraham’s character, Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, mention that the people he shot were certainly students but he denied claiming they were innocent. Picking up from the controversial Batla House Encounter which was carried out by seven members of the Delhi Police team led by Mohan Chand Sharma Inspector in the Special Cell of the Delhi police, the movie span around the time of the encounter to the immense debate and controversies that followed regarding the police’s hand in violating the rights of citizens. The incident unfolded following five serial blasts on September 2008, in which almost 30 people were killed and nearly 100 injured.

The encounter took place when the police officers were informed about the hideout of Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorists at L-18 Batla House on the morning of September 19, 2008, almost three days after the blast. The police were instructed to bring out the suspected person who was hiding in the flat in Jamia Nagar area but upon reaching the second floor of the four-storeyed building a heavy exchange of fire broke out between the groups where inspector Mohan Chand Sharma was martyred. On the other hand, the heavy exchange of fire also led to the deaths of Atif Amin and Mohammad Sajid while suspects Mohammad Saif and Zeeshan were arrested. It was later on found out that the suspects had links with Dubai and were pretty well connected to Dawood Ibrahim.

The movie is set to release this Independence Day, on August 15.

 

Plot:

As mentioned the movie will spiral around the infamous Batla House encounters which gave birth to several controversies and debates on police interference in public spaces and the violation of human rights. Based on the real life inspector Mohan Chand Sharma, the story follows a fictional version of the man named Sanjeev Kumar Yadav who finds himself amidst the chaos of the encounter which led the world to believe that the police had wrongly murdered innocent students. However, from the tone of the trailer it can be assumed the movie will follow the immense struggle the police had to go through in order to bring things back in order.

 

Cast:

The film will see John Abraham lead the cast as DCP Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, the central character of the story who leads the Batla House Encounter with seven policemen. After producing his first movie ‘Vicky Donor’, starring Ayushmann Khurrana, he produced ‘Madra Cafe’ where he also acted making it one of his first steps into going back to the history of Indian civil service stories. As ‘Madras Cafe’ followed the Indian interference in the Sri Lankan civil war during the 1990s, Abraham waited quite a long time to come up with his first solo success, ‘Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran’ which followed the first nuclear test carried out by India during the late 1990s’ which established the country as one of the nuclear powers in the world. ‘Batla House’ will be his next installment in the series of films that chiefly deal with the works and history of the Indian civil services.

Abraham will be joined by Mrunal Thakur who is making her big debut this year with Hrithik Roshan-starring movie, ‘Super 30’, set to release on July 12 this year. She also made her international debut with the 2018 movie, ‘Love Sonia’, coming from the ‘Life of Pi’ producer David Womark. She plays the lead character in the movie alongside already established actresses such as Frieda Pinto and Demi Moore.

The rest of the cast includes, Ravi Kishan as KK, Manish Chaudhari as Commissioner Jaivir, Prakash Raj as Mohan Kumar, Sonam Arora as KK's Wife, Sahidur Rahman as Dilshad Ahmed, Kranti Prakash Jha as Adil Ameen, Alok Pandey as Tufail, Faizan Khan as Mohammed Javed, Niranjan Jadhao as Sadiq, Chirag Katrecha as Zia, and Yatharth Kansal as Arif.
