Very often, a person is known by the clothes he or she wears. This is particularly true when a person visits a place frequently. Thus, while a workplace may or may not have a dress code, people tend to judge you based on your sense of style. Irrespective of what the standards of beauty mean to you, it is important that you dress up well for your workplace. Now, the sense of style goes beyond putting on clothes and extends to the accessories, the way you team up the pieces of clothing and a lot more.

Understand that what might seem gorgeous on a colleague may not be appropriate for you. Several factors like age, body shape, complexion, and comfort have a role to play in deciding what is best for you. That is why it is important that you work these things out and come up with a style statement of your own. Now, most of the days while leaving for work in the morning, we do not have the luxury of time to help us decide on all of that. To help you through it, our experts have come up with some simple tips to make workplace dressing for women a child’s play.

1. Ensure proper fitting of clothes
The key to looking smart at work is wearing clothes that fit you well. Loose clothing will look unprofessional whereas the tight fitted ones may look vulgar. If you are wearing Kurtis, try to avoid ones with a lot of flares and dangles.

For western wear, most people tend to neglect the fittings of their trousers or skirts and focus on the blouse. Do not make that mistake. The bottom wear is just as important as your top wear.

2. Dry your hair
You will have to wet your hair on some days (if not every day) before leaving to work. Make sure that you dry it out before leaving for work. Image consultants tell us that disorganized hair symbolizes disorganized life and that is suggestive of a poorly managed career.

Thus, frequently loose wet hair at work may cause you to be taken less seriously than what you would like.

3. Choose your watch carefully
Many workplaces have a culture of shaking hands. Even if your office doesn’t have it, chances are that your clients will, and you will need to shake hands. In such a case, one of the most important things that people will notice about you is your watch.

Do not go for one that is very funky or has a large dial. A simple watch which is in good condition (irrespective of whether it is branded or not) will go a long way in establishing your style statement.

4. Proper fit glasses
Irrespective of whether you wear spectacles all the time or you use anti-glare glasses when operating the computer, it is important that you wear well-fitted glasses at work. If your glasses slide down your nose regularly, it will prove to be distracting not just for you but also for others around.

Investing in a good frame that complements the shape of your face will pay off.

5. Ensure proper length
Most working women prefer wearing trousers or Kurtis to work. In either case, ensure proper length. The trousers must cover your calves. Make sure that they are not anywhere shorter. If your trouser is longer, do not fold it at the bottom. Take it to a tailor and get the excess part cut off before wearing it to work.

The Kurti should not be too short and neither should it go below your knees. A couple of inches above the knee is the perfect length. Also, try to go for Kurtis with a slit and they facilitate proper movement and make you look smart. Avoid Kurtis and tops that have a plunging neckline.

6. Avoid neon and fluorescent colours
The colour of the clothes that you are wearing speaks a lot about you. It is not mandatory for you to revolve around shades of grey and blue.

You may experiment with shades of green, purple, pink, red and more. But make sure that you keep away from the neon and fluorescent hues. Wearing such flashy colours is distracting for the onlooker and does not blend well in a work environment.

7. Shoes
Shoes are of special importance when talking about work wear. Preferably go for toe covered shoes. If your toes are visible, make sure that the same is well maintained. Avoid wearing shoes that make a lot of noise when you walk. That will draw unnecessary attention to you.

As the cleanliness of the shoes is also of utmost importance, make sure that you polish your shoes often. If you walk your way to the office, they will inevitably get dirty by the time you reach work (more so in the monsoon). In such a case, it is advisable that you wipe it with a tissue as soon as possible.

8. Go minimum on the jewellery
As is the case with your shoes, your jewellery should not make noise as well. Many people find the noise of bangles striking the keyboard to be distracting. While it is okay to wear a pair of earrings or a thin chain with pendent to work, keep away from heavy jewellery.

Under no circumstance should you wear anklets to work.

9. Makeup
It is advisable that you wear a little kajal or eyeliner and lipstick while turning up for work. Do not experiment with your makeup too much as that may hamper the decorum of the place. Avoid using bright colored nail paint, eye shadow or lip gloss.

As far as possible, stick to nude colour lipsticks that have a matt finish.

10. Keep away from strong perfume
At the workplace, no one would go about sniffing you. A smell that is appealing for you may be an odour for your colleague. Hence, while wearing deodorant, perfume or cologne is a part of personal grooming, try to keep it mild.

Do not put on deodorants that are originally meant for men. As a basic rule, avoid putting on anything that others can smell.
