The society is such that there is a lot of shamming associated with fat people. From calling them a host of unacceptable names to making them feel bad about themselves, nothing is left untouched. The host of size zero models showing up on the cover of magazines only adds to the pressure here. What makes matters worse is the constant pressure that builds up on such people to lose weight.

However, the fact remains that beauty has nothing to do with body shape. Just because today's size zero is in, it does not mean that curvy body will never come in vogue. Hence, it is important that one does not attempt to change their body shape according to market trends.

The easiest way to stick to your body, and yet fit in the society would be to dress appropriately. You will be amazed to see the difference that it makes to your image, and consequently, your social life. The best part of this is the fact that dressing appropriately is very easy if you know tips and tricks.

Read on to know how you can look smart and pretty without having to shed those extra kilos.

1. Invest in a good bra
You will be amazed to see the difference a well-fitted bra can make to your outfit. The problem that most of the heavier women face with bras is the fact that they are unable to find a bra that supports their larger bust. As a result, they end up choosing something that isn't the right size. Not only does this spoil the outfit, but it also leads to a lot of health ailments like back pain, bad posture, etc.

It is always recommended that you keep away from online shopping here and visit a bra store where the salesgirls can help you determine your exact cup size so that you may pick up something appropriate.

2. Keep away from ruffles
It is important to realize that just because something is in fashion it does not mean that you have to wear it. By putting on something that is in fashion but does not compliment your body type, you will not look good.

An example in this regard will be that of ruffles. Although these are in vogue, the fact is that they make an area look bigger than what it is. Thus, if you do not want to look bulkier, keep away from them.

3. Experiment with strips
Any form of vertical or diagonal stripes looks good on heavier women. Feel free to pick up anything there. It is not necessary that you have to avoid horizontal strips altogether, but you need to know how to use them. Horizontal stripes create an illusion of an area being larger than what it is.

Heavier women may also feel the need to making a particular area (usually it's the hips or the bust) look larger in order their body a better shape. In such cases, feel free to experiment with horizontal stripes.  The key to putting on stripes is that you should try on the dress to decide if it complements you or not.

4. Wear smaller prints
Irrespective of whether you are wearing a shirt, kurta or dress, larger prints make one look bulkier. While it is okay to go for single-coloured clothing, it is not necessary that you have to stick to those. The prints may either be in pastel shades or contrasting colours.

Going for smaller geometric prints or floral patterns is advisable. It is also recommended that you keep away from camouflage patterns.

5. Choose your colours wisely
The golden rule here is that the lighter the shade, the more it will highlight and vice versa. This does not mean that you have to stick to dark colours all the time. If you want to remove focus from your bust and highlight your hips, wear a light-coloured belt on a dark-coloured dress.

Similarly, if you want to highlight your upper body and take the focus off your waist, go for a light-coloured shirt with a dark skirt or trouser. The key to acing the colour combination here is to know your body type and which area to highlight and which one not to.

6. Go for A cut
This is applicable in the case of women who are fond of wearing skirts and dresses. It is a myth that these type of dresses look good only on women with a size zero figure. The key here is knowing which type of dress to pick.

Keep away from pencil skirts and body con dresses as these outline the waist and the hips. While all kinds of A cut dresses will look good on you, skater dresses will flaunt your body type particularly well.

7. Identify ill-fitted clothes
Most women do not realize the fact that many a time it is their choice of clothes that make them look fatter than they are. Wearing baggy clothes will make you look unprofessional.

Similarly, if the shirt that you wear to the office has stretching of the fabric, it will make you look fatter (at some times vulgar as well). The key to choosing the perfect fit is to go to a mall and pick up a shirt that you can put on but the fabric gets stretched. Then go ahead and pick the immediate next size. This is what should be your preferred size.

Also, understand that the fittings of clothes of different brands differ. Thus, if you haven't worn a brand earlier, it is always better to try it out in the stores first before making the purchase.

8. Choose your accessories well
You will be surprised to notice the difference that proper accessories can bring to your overall look. In terms of the handbag, a larger tote bag will make you look smaller. Similarly, bold and large jewellery will look good on you. This would include dangling earrings that make your neck look larger.

For your watches, it is advisable that you go for the ones with a larger dial as they make your wrist look slender (the same effect can be created by wearing multiple bangles).

Another useful tip for heavier women concerning accessories is to go for boots as they successfully create an illusion of small calves.

The key to dressing up is to be confident in your skin. You should not let the world tell you how you should feel about your body. If you succeed in achieving this, you will notice the difference it makes in the way you carry yourself and the way you look.

Remember, at the end of the day, the world will view you in the same light as you view yourself!
