Plot: The man-shaped demons dash through the lightning and fog. Greek soldiers fire arrows and chuck spears at them, even though arrows and spears don’t really hurt them. The herd of Greek soldiers is led by a charismatic SHE-WARRIOR, the soldiers attack with swords, and one demon takes a sword away and chops one soldier’s head in half right through the mouth hole to prove he is not effing around.
They chase the demons to a nearby village, where a lowly mendicant has just returned from mining a sackful of ore from a cave. A lowly mendicant is an empathetic man — he helps an old-timer who has fallen down drunk and hurt his leg, then takes him back to his mendicant hovel, where he lives with his mother.
The lowly mendicant is named Heron (voiced by Derek Phillips) and his mother is Electra (voiced by Mamie Gummer). In his efforts to help the old drunk man, Heron goes to fetch some water where he finds a woman with her intestines outside her body floating in a nearby pool and is attacked by the demon. He fights back and is later helped by the SHE-WARRIOR who captures and kills the demon.
Later, the old man tells Heron and Electra an old story about old gods battling old giants and how the gods bested the giants, but men ate the flesh of an evil giant and became evil demons. Meanwhile, the SHE-WARRIOR, whose name is Alexia (voiced by Jessica Henwick), tries the demon in the village square, on charges of being a demon. Six guys come to Heron and Electra’s house to attack her, but Heron holds his own against all of them, fending them off. Alexia stops by to ask him to join their crusade against evil, but he blanches.
The old man encourages Heron to reconsider the offer made by Alexia, then sends him off to mine some special ore for a special sword. Then the god Ares shows up to say hi to the old man, who isn’t an old man at all — he is Zeus and Heron is his son.
Then begins the story of Heron, a young boy, who is innocent and unaware of his superpowers. However, due to the arrival of the demons in his village there comes a time unavoidable and he is sent away to the battlefield which turns out to be a blessing and helps him realize his capabilities. But the story just does not end there!
Review: Greek mythology has always been in the list of seekers for story inspiration. Blood of Zeus series tells the saga of Heron, a warrior who learns that he is a rejected offspring of Zeus and must become ready to confront his past in an effort to change everyone else’s future.
Created by the very talented Charles and Vlas Parlapanides, Blood of Zeus mixes these classical narratives with the horror genre and incorporates demons than one would expect in a show about Greek mythology.
The character designs are extremely unique, especially for Heron. The statuesque figures and the kind of body type that had be depicted on vases or mosaics on walls gives an incredible feeling. It is a style that works for the show and helps Blood of Zeus stand out slightly from other series.
The animation, in general, is stunning. Certain scenes are bathed in purple, green, or blue, and it gives the supernatural elements of the series even more personality and style. It raises the standards of what should be expected of the music in an animated series.
Netflix has cultivated a strong line-up of adult animation, and Blood of Zeus may be one of the best yet. It tells an addicting story that brings together action, fantasy, and horror to create something that feels original and represents the direction that the animated series should be heading. Every thirty seconds there is something different to be impressed over. Throughout the series’, aesthetics and visuals continue to keep you excited without neglecting the characters or storytelling.
