People become vegans for different reasons, some do it to reduce animal suffering, others because they want to pursue a healthier lifestyle.

The idea of everyone adopting a vegan diet might sound extreme, but in the last decade, the number of people in the UK following a plant-based diet has risen by 340%. There are now over 0.5 million British vegans all over the world.

However, being vegan doesn’t necessarily mean you’re eating healthily, as vegan diets are naturally low in calcium, vitamin D, iron, vitamin B12, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids.

A vegan diet is one that excludes all meat, fish, poultry and other animal products such as eggs, dairy, honey etc. If you are following a vegan diet it is important to include protein from foods such as nuts, seeds, beans and pulses.

India has more vegetarians than the rest of the world put together. In India, vegetarianism is usually synonymous with lacto vegetarianism. Most restaurants in India clearly distinguish and market themselves as being either ‘non-vegetarian’, ‘vegetarian’, or ‘pure vegetarian’.

The Sattvik people in India worship the different forms of God, the Rajasik worship the gods of power and wealth. The Sattvik people believe that sattvik diet makes our body, mind and intellect sattvik; whereas, consuming meat and alcohol make an individual tamasik. In reality, a non-vegetarian diet is just not the diet of human beings. God has not created non-vegetarian food for human beings. However, Sattvik diet is different from the vegan diet.

However, there are many Indian celebrities who follow vegan diet which include –

Virat Kohli

The Indian cricket team captain recently adopted veganism in October. He went through a major fitness transformation after deciding to steer away from animal-based products. He even admitted that the change in his food habit has improved his game.

Kangana Ranaut

Another famous personality is Kangana , who is an actress by profession turned vegan in 2013. Prior to this, she was a non-vegetarian. The B-town diva ditched dairy-based products after she realised that it was giving her acidity. She is very vocal about her take on veganism and cow slaughtering.

Kiran Rao

Aamir khan’s wife, who is a producer, director, and writer of B-town, is also a vegan. She gave up animal meat and dairy product for the good of her health.

Even Aamir decided to go vegan in 2015. He took the decision after his wife showed him a video about the common diseases caused by consuming animal products and how a diet change can prevent them.

What would happen if everyone in the world becomes vegan? Well, we'd use most of the pastureland for restoring forests and grasslands to help reduce carbon dioxide in the air. We'd start growing more crops to fill the gaps in our food supply. Livestock-related gas emissions would drop by 70%.

What would happen to the livestock if everyone gave up meat? Well then, billions of animals would be slaughtered or abandoned. However, veganism would also affect the environment positively.
