Attoor Ravi Varma dies at 89
Thrissur: Well-known poet and translator Attoor Ravi Varma died here on Friday, his family sources said.
Varma, 89, was under treatment for age-related ailments.
One of the pioneers of modern Malayalam poetry, Varma is a recipient of the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award, Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Poetry and Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Translation, besides many other honours.
The state government had honoured him with the Ezhuthachan Puraskaram, the highest literary award, in 2012.
The Kerala Sahitya Akademi had inducted him as their distinguished fellow in 2017.
Varma, born on October 27, 1930, in Attoor village of Thrissur district and completed his studies at Malabar Christian College before graduating in Malayalam with honours from the University College, Thiruvananthapuram.
Varma, who retired as a college professor in 1986, has published his poems 'Attoor Ravi varmayude kavithakal' and 'Malayalathinte Priya Kavithakal,' among others.
State Cultural minister A K Balan and opposition leader Ramesh Cheniithala condoled the death.
