Mumbai: A team led by Dr. Suhas Aagre MD DM, Consultant Medical Oncologist, Asian Cancer Institute, Mumbai, successfully saved the lungs of a 62-year-old woman from Mumbai. The patient took 6 cycles of chemotherapy and radiation to get back on track.

Life was beautiful until, 62-year-old Mayadevi Neopane, a resident of Mumbai, was diagnosed with stage IV SMALL CELL lung cancer. The patient was jolted out of her normal life owing to facial swelling, difficulty in breathing and Cough that would need oxygen therapy. On consulting the chest physician, it was revealed that she was suffering from advanced lung cancer and may lose her life owing to the aggressive nature of the tumor. However, the patient was referred to Dr. Suhas Aagre who gave her a new way of life.

Dr. Suhas Aagre MD DM, Consultant Medical Oncologist, Asian Cancer Institute, Mumbai, said, “It is the most aggressive type of cancer. Survival is poor (usually ranges in few months) as aggressive nature enables the tumor to spread to distant sites in short a span of time. Her tru-cut biopsy confirmed small cell lung carcinoma. She also underwent a PET-CT which indicated that there is a large mass ( 8.6 *8.4*8 cms) present in her right lung which narrows great vessels of the neck associated with bilateral pleural effusion and pericardial effusion too”

He added, “The patient was given 6 cycles of chemotherapy and radiation. Fortunately, she responded dramatically to the treatment. Facial swelling was no more seen and her breathlessness also subsided. She is on regular follow up for last 2 years and leading a normal life.”

The patient’s daughter Sharda Neopane said, “I was concerned about my mother’s health after she was diagnosed with lung cancer as it kept on worsening. I would be by her side and help her do the daily chores. I couldn’t see my mother suffering and ran from pillar to the post to save her life. Fortunately, we visited Asian cancer institute Day Care center Borivali at the right time. After treatment, her life has completely changed. She is leading a normal independent life. We go for regular follow-ups, and the doctor has also said that my mother is alright now, as the reports are normal.”

“I was devastated when lung cancer struck me. But, after taking treatment at the Asian Cancer Institute Day Care center Borivali, I was assured that I will get back to normal even though many doctors declared that I wouldn’t survive. I thank the doctors for saving my life,” concluded Patient Mayadevi Neopane.
