The story is plotting a horrifying crime. Its water-tight evidence points to a single suspect, who was seen seventy miles away, who does have an iron-clad alibi. Detective Anderson sets out to investigate the impossible fact. Basically, the fact that his prime suspect has been to two places at the same time, the crime scene and with writers in another town.
The story revolves around a murder of the 11-year-old boy who was raped and mutilated. Based on words of eyewitness and forensic evidence, detective Anderson arrests a teacher and 'Little League' coach Terry Maitland. However, Anderson, the detective, finds out Maitland's alibi. The investigation runs from Ohio to Texas. Few more eyewitnesses change the direction of the investigation by confirming that Maitland was out of the town when the murder took place.
Despite strong pieces of evidence, the detective still believes that Maitland is the ultimate killer. Nevertheless, his investigation goes further as Maitland was shot to death in front of the courthouse by the boy's elder brother who was subsequently shot and killed by Anderson. As a result, he was put on administrative leave. With the help of a private investigator, he follows the trail of clues that leads him to Marysville, Texas.
The Outsider (the real killer) compels the rival attorney of Anderson to join hands with him to kill Anderson. He (The Outsider) promises the attorney that he will be cured of his cancer if he kills Anderson. By stepping on shreds of evidence and clue, they circumscribe to know the actual truth, which is enough to get goose bumps.
Review
This nerve-shredding novel has received rave review from critics as well as a positive impression. It comprises a perfect collection of words for making the story almost an unbearable suspense. King's story kicks into high gear when the investigation expands, and horrifying details begin to emerge and generate strong tension.
Terry Maitland seems like a nice guy. However, the iron-head fact is invincible as gravity that a man can't be at two places at the same moment. Can he? Or, is someone trying to frame him?
Eventually, when the answers begin to be disclosed, it will really shock you as only Stephen King can. His blend of supernatural crime makes you a clever reader, who will keep trying to guess until the end.

About the Author
Stephen Edwin King was born on September 21, 1947. He is an American author of horror, supernatural fiction, suspense, and fantasy novels. He is as much as an American icon as the '68 Fastback or a classic red and white Plymouth Fury. He has written more than 61 novels, 6 non-fiction books and approximately 200 short stories that have been published in book collections. All the books are worldwide bestsellers. His books have sold more than 350 million copies, many of which have been reshaped into feature films, mini-series, TV series, and comic books.
His recent novels are The Institute, Elevation, The Outsider, Sleeping Beauties (co-written with his son Owen King), and the Bill Hodges trilogy: End of Watch, Finders Keepers and Mr. Mercedes (an Edgar Award winner for Best Novel and an AT&T Audience Network original television series).
